Child-Led Play Therapy
A Compassionate Approach to learn & grow through play. Child-Led Play Therapy is a therapeutic approach that allows children to express themselves freely through play.
It is rooted in the belief that play is a child’s natural language, and through play, they can communicate emotions, process experiences, and develop coping skills.

Key Principles of Child-Led Play Therapy:
-
Child-Centered Approach: The child directs the session, choosing what to play with and how to engage. The therapist follows the child’s lead, creating a space of trust and safety.
-
Non-Directive Interaction: There are no structured instructions or imposed activities; instead, the therapist observes, reflects, and responds to the child’s play without controlling it.
-
Unconditional Acceptance:The therapist provides a warm, non-judgmental, and supportive environment where the child feels accepted regardless of their emotions or behaviours.
-
Emotional Expression & Processing: Play allows children to express emotions that may be difficult to verbalise, such as fear, anger, sadness, or confusion.
-
Empowerment & Autonomy: By making choices in play, children develop self-confidence, problem-solving skills, and a sense of control over their experiences.
Benefits of Child-Led Play Therapy:
-
Supports Emotional Regulation: Helps children navigate emotions safely.
-
Encourages Self-Expression: Allows children to communicate without needing words.
-
Enhances Social & Cognitive Development: Strengthens interpersonal skills, problem-solving, and resilience.
-
Heals Trauma & Anxiety: Provides a safe outlet to process and integrate difficult experiences.
-
Fosters Creativity & Imagination: Encourages free expression and exploration.
What Happens in a Session?
The therapist sets up a safe space with toys, art supplies, and other creative materials.
The child is free to explore, while the therapist observes and engages without directing.
The therapist may reflect on what the child is doing to help them process emotions (I see you are building a tower. That looks very strong!).
Over time, recurring play themes may emerge, revealing deeper emotional experiences.
